PRESCOTT – Several children’s books have been donated to the Nevada County Library to celebrate the September 14 dedication of the Depot Museum caboose.

The books include the Bill Peet classic “The Caboose Who Got Loose” as well as:

* “C Is For Caboose”

* “Caboose on the Loose”

* “The Little Red Caboose”

* “Loose Caboose & Other Math Mysteries”

* “The Missing Caboose”

* “Tales from the Red Caboose”

Other donations are the adult non-fiction book “The Railroad Caboose: Its 100 Year History, Legend, and Lore” and two photo books, both titled “Caboose.”

For almost 150 years, a caboose, usually red, was the last car on every American train, serving as an office and lookout post for the crew. But by the 1980s it had been largely replaced by a small electronic gadget called an End-of-Train Device.

The P&NWRR 3 caboose will be dedicated on Thursday, September 14, with a ceremony between 9:30-11 a.m. and tours available. The caboose had been in storage for decades and was last used by the Prescott & Northwestern, the short-line railroad that once extended from Prescott into Pike County. Built mainly to haul timber to the Prescott mill for Ozan Lumber Co., P&NW also transported peaches and passengers during its heyday.
