PRESCOTT – Like Newport, Gurdon was supposed to give the Wolves a stiff test. They didn’t.

Like Newport, by halftime the Go-Devils were facing the mercy rule to start the second half. In the end, the Wolves posted a 50-7 win to go 2-0 to open the 2021 season.

Gurdon was coming off a 60-16 win over the Lafayette County Cougars in the season opener, while the Wolves whipped the Greyhounds 56-6. The Devils did manage to do something Newport couldn’t – score an offensive touchdown.

The Devils controlled the time of possession using a punishing ground game, focusing on the middle of Prescott’s defensive line. However, converting time of possession into points proved problematic for the visitors as Prescott’s offense struck like lightning, with the longest drive of the first half taking a whopping three plays.

The Wolves put 43 points on the board in the first half, scoring on all but one possession. The one possession they didn’t score on started off with a 51-yard touchdown pass called back because of holding. This put Prescott behind the chains and the drive ended with a punt to the Devil 9.

Gurdon won the toss and elected to kick. However, the Devils were flagged for being offside and had to kick from the 35. Prescott called for a fair catch at the Wolf 40/

Jaylen Hopson gained nine on first down before Carston Poole hit Hopson with a screen. Hopson took it to the house to make it 6-0 with 11:43 in the first. The two-point conversion made it 8-0/

Caleb Harris put the kick in the end zone with Gurdon setting up shop at its 20. The Devils drove to the Prescott 39 before coughing the ball up with Prescott recovering at its 41.

A screen from Poole to Jacaylon Zachery lost  four yards, but it didn’t matter as Poole found a wide open Harris with a 63-yard scoring pass. The two-point conversion put Prescott up 16-0 with 8:03 showing.

Again the kick wound up in the end zone, but this time it was three and out for the Devils with the punt only making it to the Gurdon 49.

Poole hit Zachery for a 51-yard scoring pass only to have it called back for holding. From there, Prescott went backwards and wound up punting to the Gurdon 9.

Gurdon moved the ball, with the help of a facemask call, to the Prescott 35 as time ran out in the first. Two plays later, Gurdon turned the ball over on downs.

Poole was dropped for a loss of three on first down, but Zachery broke loose to midfield on the second play. Poole hit Harris for six more with 11:15 left in the half. The point after made it 23-0.

Gurdon bobbled the kick, but managed to return it to the 23. The Devils drove to the 41 before another fumble gave the ball back to the Wolves with 9:35 showing.

Poole hit Omarion Dickens this time for six more. The PAT made it 30-0.

A personal foul by Prescott on the kick gave Gurdon the ball at its 33. The Devils drove 67-yards in 13 plays for its first score of the night. The PAT made it 30-7.

Prescott set up shop at its 30. Hopson took a handoff, found a hole and raced 70-yards to make it 36-7. The PAT made it 37-7 with 3:40 left in the half.

Gurdon started at its 31 and went three and out, punting to the Devil 43.

Prescott lost five for having too many men on the field. It didn’t matter as Zachery scored on a 19-yard run three plays later. The PAT was blocked, leaving the score 43-7.

The mercy rule was in effect for the second half, with the Wolves, with a deeper bench, subbing players in and out the rest of the game.

Prescott has a bye week this week but will return to action on Sept.17 when the team travels to Hope for a date with the Bobcats. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
