On Thursday April 23rd, the Hope Bobcats were tasked with defending their own against the Horatio Lions in their last non-conference game of the season. In a rollercoaster ride of a game, the Bobcats lost in an absolute heartbreaker 6-5. Although a losing effort, the Cats played one of their best overall games of the season, with Israel Juarez dishing out yet another good pitching performance in his final season, and many outstanding plays from the field and from the plate.
From the get-go, it was certain that the game would turn out to be a nail-biter. A single run would be scored by the Lions in the top of the first inning from an error to give them an early 1-0 lead. This would be the sole scoring drive from the first half of the game as the two sides would play out a neck-to-neck brawl with the aforementioned Israel Juarez striking out six Lions during his five and a half inning sprint. In the bottom of the fourth however, the Bobcats woke up the offense, with #3 Austin Courtney leading off the push for a tying run with a single and two consecutive stolen bases, leaving him at third for a sacrifice fly from Drake Mathis to bring in the first Bobcat run of the game. After a lightning-fast top of the fifth, the home side exploded in the bottom of the inning. Leading off the drive were Israel Juarez and Cayden Haywood who both tallied singles to put two runners on base, leading the opening scorer Austin Courtney up to bat, who drilled a two RBI single between the right infield gap, putting Hope up 3-1. Wanting to leave a mark of his own on the game, Catcher Sam Johnson would strike a fourth single of the inning right after to bring in Austin, putting the Cats up by three.
With victory in hand however, the Bobcats suddenly lost their grip in the top of the sixth, with a three-run masterclass from Horatio players #13 Eli Vann and #18 Ean Shipp who brought in two of the runs, while #19 Grayson Pickett scored a third off of an off-kilter infield throw. Adding to the misery, the Lions would score a finishing two runs in the top of the seventh from a two RBI single from #8 Casen Smith, bringing the score to 6-4 Lions. The Bobcats would give the game one last go in the bottom of the inning, beginning with a bombastic triple from lead-off man Jaiden Brown out to the right field fence, and a scoring RBI single from Drake Mathis, although not being able to bring back life to a devastating 6-5 loss.
The Hope Bobcats will close their 2026 baseball season with one final home stand-off against the Magnolia Panthers on Friday April 24th at 5:00pm.
