Hamilton Haven aids local kindergarten students with summer reading

PRESCOTT — Blevins’ Randy Hughes Elementary, Nevada Elementary School, and Prescott Elementary school received more than 125 books from Prescott nonprofit Hamilton Haven.

Dr. Kimberly Turner is the principal of the Blevins schools. Tonda Pennington serves as Nevada Elementary principal. Kimberly Grimes is principal of Prescott Elementary.

“Our aim is to encourage reading through the summer,” said Hamilton Haven administrative assistant and board member Leslie Hughes. “We look forward to continuing this community involvement of focusing on education and reading with our young neighbors.”

Volunteers from Hamilton Haven delivered the books to seven kindergarten classes in the three schools on May 11 and May 12.

“When we read, we win. Readers are leaders,” Hamilton Haven executive director Michele Hamilton Rhodes said. “Young people expanding their knowledge is exciting.”

Hamilton Haven public relations coordinator Nathan Tidwell noted that this is the fourth year of the book donation project.

“It started with Prescott Elementary in 2023, and we added Blevins and Nevada in 2024,” he said.

“Our team sees this work as a blessing and an investment in our community,” Rhodes added.

Hamilton Haven provides emergency, short-term housing to temporarily displaced families and individuals.
