The Hempstead County Quorum Court met for their regular April meeting. County Judge Jerry Crane noted this was the first Quorum Court meeting in the new courthouse.

Under new business the JP’s approved an ordinance amending the county road budget.

JP James Griffin addressed the county library board.  He noted the board members are limited to 10 year terms and all existing board members had exceeded this period. One current member also is not a county resident. Griffin said the county needs to replace them but they’ve asked Jerry Pruden to remain through the end of the year to help the new board members.  The new members nominated  were Jamie Williams, Jacob Jones, Sara Darling, and Dr. Roy Turner.  They were approved by the JP’s.

Sylvia Brown spoke about the library board nominees and expressed the sentiment the nomination process should have been publicized.  Brown also spoke about the use of American Rescue Funds and again seeking input from the public.  She offered her assistance.. Brown also noted Fulton is looking at using some of their funds for reconstruction of the water system.  She also suggested the water systems in the county come together to partner on such upgrades utilizing the funds.

Terrie James of the Cooperative Extension Service noted the Hope Farmers Market opens on the 3rd.

JP Steve Atchley noted the opening ceremony and ribbon cutting for the new courthouse will be May 19th at 10am.  Atchley noted Farmers Bank will be providing refreshments.  He also noted the Hope High Band will perform.  Atchley noted since early voting will be underway there can’t be any political campaigning that day within 100 feet of the building.  JP Jessie Henry asked how the public is reacting to the new courthouse.  Assessor Kim Smith said the public feedback is positive.  Atchley noted there are still some bugs to work out especially with the phones.  Smith said she looks forward to coming to work.  The meeting then adjourned.
